It really should be called All for the Winner 3 to be honest.

I enjoyed the shitty sci-fi effects and the story was entertaining. There were some good moments like the kung fu while on the phone scene and a random Maggie Cheung card, but the whole romance plot was terrible. Gong Li could’ve been utilised so much better.

    God Of Time Travel

There are two things that long running franchises do when they run out of ideas, they either go to space or back in time... Wong Jing sent Chow back in time. The time travel/space films are usually very gimmicky and are unable to compete with previous franchise instalments but 'God Of Gamblers III' manages to be the second best film in the franchise.

'God Of Gamblers III' has hardly any Gambling but plenty of terrific action and comedy, it's probably my second favourite Stephen Chow film right after ' Love On Delivery' and my favourite Wong Jing film right after 'God Of Gamblers'... that also makes it my second favourite 'God Of Gamblers' film. 'God Of…

an early one in stephen chow’s filmography and a weaker one in the god of gamblers franchise. didnt age well due to the degrading homosexual remarks. more gambling and fewer fighting scenes pls !!!! great bun shop scene though, loved the set and costumes

if you are craving another god of gamblers film, or you are a stephen chow fan, this film will definitely make the grade.

the storyline is very up-lifting. the space travel genre is ubiquitous in the modern films and adding creativity and originality might ruin everything but not for this film. wong jing sets the film as one that appeals to the younger audience.

wong jing moves the focus of the film beyond stephen chow’s character and manages to make stars out of everyone who’s in the film. this fantasy, more comedic approach to the story is creative, especially compared to its predecessors. wong jing probably gave an outline of the script to the two stars and they were allowed…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Confirming my belief that Wong Jing has no business making movies that are more than 95 minutes long, but it's not as overlong as I would've expected. I just love the setting and all the references, could've done without the more Wong Jing-ish jokes though. Superior to God of Gamblers 1 and 2, a little weaker than All for the Winner.

Gong Li is obviously one of the best Chinese actresses of all time but I really don't know what they were doing with her. One character is boring and useless until she gets thrown out a window (one of the many, many, many references to The Bund) and the other is a mentally disabled woman who's plot I really…

  • Review by CyberNinja1985 ★★★½

Takes a hard left turn after two reasonably sedate God of Gamblers films, when Stephen Chow suddenly gets sucked into a time loop or vortex or whatever, and ends up in Shanghai in 1937, followed up by what seems like a very elaborate parody of legendary TVB serial The Bund. The whole thing is kind of overlong, but there is still enough inspired Stephen Chow wackiness on display, with seemingly more accessible humor then some of his other early stuff that I‘ve seen.

Features a big song and dance number about steamed buns.

For every Wong Jing film I loathe, there seems to be one I absolutely love.
God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai is shockingly good.

To believe this is even sharing a name with the run-of-the-mill bland memory loss gambling film that was God of Gamblers.
The title is literally the only thing connecting those two films and I for one couldn't be possibly happier about that.
Its incredible how this franchise manages to get more and more insane with every incarnation.
But I think it's impossible to beat this film in that department.

God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai starts with John Ching's character from the second (or I guess third) film planing the assassination of Stephen Chow's…

  • Review by jeffster ★★★½

My fifth Stephen Chow film, following My Hero, All for the Winner, God of Gamblers 2 and Fist of Fury 1991. In all honesty, I was fairly underwhelmed with the previous four films (except the Bruce Lee riff which I flat out hated), so my expectations were understandably low. This therefore, felt like nothing less than a revelation. Taking his Saint of Gamblers character and transporting him to a wonderful Back to the Future backdrop, this two hours of often hilarious (Even regarding the references I didn't get at the time) fantasy action is the film that made me a Chow fan. It's still among my favorites of his.

  • Review by The Movie Matt ★★½

While God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai does continue on the series, it might be more fitting to call this one All for the Winner 2 instead. This is because that, while still being better than God of Gamblers II, Back to Shanghai lacks that grounded sense of "cool" that either Chow Yun Fat or Andy Lau brought to the table in the previous entries. Instead, this one is purely slap stick focused and focuses on the magic powers of Stephen Chow's The Saint of Gamblers and the hijinks created when he accidentally sends himself and a handful of other people back into 1930s Shanghai. The humor is hit or miss and the story about him falling in love…

  • Review by Harris Dang ★★★½

It's quite refreshing to see Gong Li in such an unpretentious film like God of Gamblers III. =)

  • Review by RealJohnGrace ★★★★½

The best science fiction comedy of the 1990s. With Barry Wong's cameo as Scissor Legs from Fight Back To School, I guess this implies that Stephen Chow movies are their own universe.
